AMC Movie Theater HistoryHere's a trivia question: What do the letters "AMC" stand for in the name of the AMC Theaters? Take a moment to think about it...then discover the answer at the end of this introductory section!
The AMC Theaters are an American tradition, dating back clear to 1920! At that time, Vaudeville live stage variety shows were cooling down as places to head for dates and family outings. However, silent films were red-hot, hip 'n happening places to "see and be seen" by all one's friends. Movie theaters were already being built in all the hottest downtown districts of cities all over the country. And, entrepreneur Edward Durwood wanted a piece of the action.
In fact, he thought that, if anything, movies represented an UNDERrated segment of the entertainment market. Though some were pooh-poohing motion pictures as a "passing fad," he knew that there was talk of adding sound to mass-released films; and if "talkies" ever did reach the general public, there would be no stopping an ever-increasing torrent of films being produced to satisfy the clamor of the entertainment-hungry masses!
The rest is history. Edward Durwood started the Durwood Theatres, which were large, single-screen theaters (like all the rest of movie theaters being built at that time.) The AMC name was added to the company when Edward's son, Stan Durwood, took over the family business. He changed not only the name of the company, but also its focus: developing more-efficient theaters which featured more than one movie screen!
In the early '60's, the younger Durwood led the company as it opened the very first twin-screen theater in the USA. The year was 1963, a perilous time for the movie industry. Most homes now had television sets; and color TV was beginning to be broadcast for the most popular shows. Were people right---HAD movies been merely a fad? What a time to test this new concept!
AMC Theaters had a hit on their hands! The twin-screen theater was very popular. And, as Durwood had envisioned, it was also time & money-efficient, as one staff of employees could run both theaters, just as long as their showtimes were staggered. It wasn't long, then, until AMC built first a 4-screen and then a 6-screen theater. You might say that AMC Theaters "set the standard" for what is now virtually the one-and-only format for new motion picture theaters: the megaplex.
Other "firsts" for AMC included introducing theater armrests with cupholders, and stadium-style seating! (Where would we all be without stadium seating? It makes the difference, sometimes, between enjoying...or NOT enjoying...the film, depending on whose head is in the row in front of you!)
Are you ready for the answer to the trivia question? What do the letters "AMC" stand for? Our first guess was "American Movie Company" What was yours? And so, what's the REAL answer??? It's American Multi-Cinema! What an appropriate name for the company that invented the multiple-screen cinema house!
