Anthropologie stores are unique in the fact that they don't sell just one type of item. Is Anthropologie a clothing store? Yes, it's a women's clothing store, selling a wide variety of dresses, pants, skirts, and loungewear.Is Anthropologie an accessories shop? Once again, the answer is, "yes." While it's not uncommon for a clothing store to sell accessories that match in style with the type of clothing sold within the shop, Anthropologie sells a larger variety of accessories...particularly shoes and handbags...than do most clothing stores.
Is Anthropologie a home decor store? For a third time, the answer is, "Yes, it is." Each store dedicates a section of the shop to beautiful items that could enhance your home. An emphasis is placed on items which are unique. Limited-production items (as opposed to the mass-produced) are the rule at Anthropologie stores. Even one-of-a-kind items can be found among Anthropologie's merchandise mix, at times.
Anthropologie Stores: Are you in their group of targeted customers?
According to Anthropologie's literature, their targeted customer is a woman in her 30's to 40's with an upscale income. If you watch customers come and go at an Anthropologie store, your eyes may tell you a different story. Many older women enjoy shopping at Anthropologie stores, and some younger women, as well. And, though it's impossible to tell the income level of customers just by looking, it doesn't seem like all of its customers are wealthy. However, they've put money aside for shopping at Anthropologie because visiting them is a special source of pleasure.Despite the downturn in the economy which has sent other stores closing up shop at dozens of locations, Anthropologie stores remain financially healthy---vibrantly so, it seems. Aimed to appeal to seekers of the unusual and different, Anthropologie recreates an atmosphere similar to a high-end flea market. There's always something new, different, and even exciting to look at on every visit. Anthropologie visitors spend an average of 80 minutes per visit in the store (compared to many "traditional" clothing stores which average about 15 minutes per visit by their customers.)
Anthopologie's sister-store, Urban Outfitters...similar in offering highly eclectic merchandise, but aimed at the 18-30 crowd...averages 70 minutes per visit by its customers, too. If King Midas touched a group of stores with his golden finger, this chain is possibly it!

One could say that the Anthropologie customer typically possesses the following traits---
- Independent-minded: The Anthropologie customer wants something "different." While she doesn't want to look stodgy and "old-fogie," she doesn't feel the need to be wearing EXACTLY what everyone else is wearing, either. For example, you can buy woolie mukluk slippers sporting a Scandinavian-style design at Anthropologie...even though these aren't wildly in vogue at the moment. Yet, an independent-minded woman who likes this style will wear them, anyway. To her, her clothing is about HER interests...not those of "the crowd."
- Understated, rather than obvious: The Anthropologie shopper is confident enough NOT to need the world to know where she bought her clothing or the dollar amount that she paid for it. At the Anthropologie stores, you won't find items that are emblazoned with a designer's name or initials, nor are woven into the fabric. The Anthropologie customer likes the merchandise because it suits her tastes...nothing less, nothing more.
- Offbeat: The merchandise at Anthropologie is just a bit more "offbeat" than what can be found at mainstream stores...and, likewise, the Anthropologie customer is a woman who likes the quirky and the unexpected.
- Feminine: Most clothing sold at Anthropologie stores would not "fit in" at a unisex shop. Clothing at Anthropologie generally says, "I'm glad to be a woman," without being overtly sexy or body-baring. Dresses have flowing lines...and many styles of dresses and skirts are available. Floral prints, appliques, laces, velvets and dainty details can be found in many Anthropologie clothing styles
- Thin: Clothing customers at Anthropologie must be relatively thin; size 14 is the largest size available at Anthropologie (and even then, some styles stop at size 12.) On the other hand, you don't need to be a "rail" to shop at Anthropologie; some trendier stores these days have Size 10 as their largest available size! On the other hand, women of any size can enjoy the large shoe and purse collection, as well as the beautiful home decor items.
