As you probably know, there are now dozens of locations where you can stuff and dress your own Teddy Bear....but there's still only ONE absolute-favorite chain of bear-building stores. And that's the Build A Bear Workshops...creator of this fun fad!

The Build A Bear Workshop maintains the widest offering of Teddy Bear building locations in the world, offers the most accessories, keeps a constantly rotating stock of merchandise, and features both bears AND other styles of stuffed animals in costumes to match the season. (For example, in a picture of Winnie the Pooh below on this page, you'll see him all dressed up for Halloween in his Pirate costume, ready to head out trick-or-treating!)

What goes on at a Build A Bear Workshop?

Step 1: Selecting your Buildabear to stuff

Your first task at BuildABear will be to pick out an empty stuffed animal "shell" to stuff. This is not going to be easy (as you can tell from the cute Build A Bear pictures on this page.) There are several dozen adorable "empty" animals from which you can choose at any given moment...and each one just as cute as all the others! Prices range from about $10 to $25 for the undressed Build A Bear animal, with most of the styles costing in the $16 to $20 price range.

An example of each type of animal available sits pre-stuffed on a shelf...to show you just how your finished product is going to look. And, beneath these finished "example" animals, you'll find barrels with the unstuffed shells. When you decide which animal you want, you should simply take the empty shell of your choice out of its bin....and head to the Bear Stuffing Machines! (Note: most stores have a selection of Build A Bear animals which have already been stuffed and dressed ready for customers in a hurry to buy. If you choose a pre-assembled bear, you won't get to customize the outfit and accessories...but these ready-to-buy stuffed animals are great for times when you're "on the run.")

Step 2: Stuffing your Buildabear animal

You'll be offered the chance to add a "voice box" to your stuffed creation. For a small, reasonably-priced fee, your cute animal will become able to say "I Love You!," or whatever your selection (from over a dozen choices) is that you'd like the little cutie to say. You may also be able to choose a song instead of a spoken message.

The second addition to your bear is included within the bear's price...and that's its heart! In fact, your animal's little heart is so important that it gets its own little "ceremony" as you (or your child) place the heart inside the bear during the stuffing process.


Next, it's time to add the fluff! An employee will place the bear's heart and voice box inside the animal, then start to fill it with the cottony white fluff that you see in the large Bear Stuffing Machines which each store has. Guests help the process along by pushing on a foot pedal that releases the fluff into the animals (as you can see in the photo to your right.)

Last of all, there's some lacing to be tightened along the teddy bear's back...and, Voila! Your bear friend is finished!

Step 3: Dressing and accessorizing your Build A Bear creation

Aside from regular fashion clothing, you can choose seasonal outfits, as well. You'll find Christmas-themed outfits during the winter holiday season; trick-or-treating costumes during Halloween time; and sports team outfits during the appropriate months of the year (baseball uniforms in the summer, football jerseys in the fall, etc.)

It doesn't matter what the season...the Build A Bear store will be celebrating the next upcoming holiday by offering you some very clever and inventive bears and costuming! Where else can you find a "colored egg suit" for a stuffed rabbit or chick? Or green, shamrock-imprinted Teddy Bears every St Patrick's Day?

After your stuffed creation is dressed in its costume or latest fashion, it's time to pile on the accessories! You can add shoes, hats, toys, sunglasses, underwear, socks, purses, roller skates, and more.

You can buy your stuffed puppy a comfortable little dog bed...or take him for a ride in a Build A Bear Stroller!

Would your bear like to attend school? Go on...let him go! You can be sure that your bear will have a cap and gown to wear when it's diploma time!

Does your BuildABear want to get married? No problem there, either. A fashion bridal gown or tuxedo is not far away at a Build A Bear store!
