Cinderella Pictures, History and Gifts...

including Cinderella Figurines, Jewelry and Collectibles

In the slide show above, you're viewing pictures of Princess Cinderella at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California.

Where can you see and meet Cinderella at Disneyland? The best place you can see Princess Cinderella up close...and get in line to meet her...is at Disney's Princess Fantasy Faire in the park's Fantasyland themed area (directly across from the Toontown Railroad Depot.) Cinderella also rides in Walt Disney's Parade of Dreams, the major parade at Disneyland Park...and her Fairy Godmother even helps lead the way before it begins!

In Disney's California Adventure Park, just across the street from the original Disneyland, Cinderella rides in her pumpkin coach as Disney's Electrical Parade makes its way through the streets (on selected evenings.) Along with her royal coach, you'll see a float bearing Prince Charming...and Cinderella's squabbling step-sisters, too! A canopied scene from the ball features dancers wearing lighted clothing, and a Clock Tower Float shows that...uh oh...it's the magical hour of midnight!

On this page, we'll talk about the Cinderella story's history, and the elegant collectibles that Cinderella's fans cherish.

The history of the Cinderella Story

Cindy is one gal who "wasn't born yesterday!"

Picture: Cinderella waves from a float in the Disneyland Christmas Parade Some Cinderella fans are surprised to learn that this popular princess wasn't created by Walt Disney.

While Walt Disney most certainly created original material, and got his start with characters & cartoons he directly dreamed-up, not every production featured his own, original characters. And, there's certainly nothing wrong with that. Disney's conception of classic stories and fairy tales brought a new life to the old plots...making them colorful, memorable, and relevant to current generations.

Disney's first full-length movie was Snow White, and it was an adaptation of an old fairy-tale, not a brand-new creation. The same is true of the Cinderella story.

Walt Disney's animated movie "Cinderella" came out in 1950. It was a hit, receiving several film awards plus 3 Academy Award nominations. Disney's animated "Cinderella" remains extremely popular today; when the Cinderella Platinum Edition DVD debuted in 2005, the re-mastered classic sold an astounding 3 million+ copies in its first week alone!

Picture: Cinderella's Fairy Godmother leads a Disneyland Parade But where did the Cinderella story first begin? That's very difficult to say, because it fades 'way back into time. Plus, it depends on your exact definition of "the beginning of the Cinderella story." Do you mean the scenario and plot of the action? Or, the name "Cinderella" itself?

The origin of Cinderella's plot is quite ancient. The story of a downtrodden girl who suffers abuse at the hands of her stepmother goes as far back as ancient China and Greece...and appears in many other cultures, as well. A French version by Charles Perrault (from 1697) is deemed to be the oldest version of what we consider a "modern" Cinderella story, complete with the pumpkin coach, a fairy godmother and glass slippers.

For further details about Cinderella's history, you may want to read the www.SurLaLunaFairyTales.com website, which takes a scholarly approach to analyzing the story. Another place to get further info is Wikipedia's Cinderella article, where you'll discover the massive list of Cinderella books, movies and TV productions that have been released over the years. The number may surprise you!

How does Cinderella's history affect the collectibles you'll find?

Picture: Princess Cinderella makes a pledge at Disneyland's Princess Fantasy Faire attraction The Cinderella story can never become the property of any one person or company. Because of its ancient beginnings, the story itself, in its many versions, lies in the public domain.

Therefore, one type of Cinderella figurines, jewelry and collectibles you'll see in the marketplace features a different Cinderella face, hairstyle and clothing from the familiar Disney story. You are even free to create your OWN Cinderella books, decorations, etc...and even sell them. As long as your work has its own original words and "look," it's perfectly OK.

Disney art, on the other hand, can't be copied and sold at-will. The fine-art companies, such as The Bradford Exchange and Swarovski (Crystal) who make high-end Disney collectibles, all have obtained a franchise allowing them to do this.

Of the 2 types of Cinderella collectibles, it's Disney's rendition of Cinderella that warms the heart of many modern-day women who love this story. This is a good thing, because high-quality Cinderella collectibles featuring Disney artwork is in abundance. Of the many styles available, it's nearly certain that collectors will find a piece that "calls out" to them...and, often times, several! In addition, new pieces are continually being created as older "limited edition" sets sell out and new fads develop.
