In the slide show above, you're viewing pictures of graceful and beautiful fairy costumes, like the ones you can buy in your local Halloween displays or in online stores. This particular collection comes from BuyCostumes.com, one of the internet's largest Halloween costume stores. Of course, this is not all of the fairy, pixie and sprite costumes & accessories that are available; there would be too many to fit into this slide show. If you'd like to see more, here are links to the little girl's fairy costumes and women's fairy costumes sections of the www.BuyCostumes.com website.
On the rest of this page, you'll find ideas for buying and sewing fairy costumes for all ages from infants and toddlers to adult women.
Should you choose a fairy costume for Halloween?
What could be more beautiful, graceful--or fun--than a fairy costume?
Fairies are sweet, playful, mischievous....and ultra-feminine. What could be a better costume for suggesting that you, too, have all of these wonderful qualities?
You'll revel in layers of sheer fabric and beautiful colors, and you'll have the coolest costume accessories of all---wings, wands...and maybe little crowns or garlands for your hair. It's many-a-girl's dream costume!
It's all about the wings...
At prom time, it's all about the dress. But for a fairy costume, the first thing you have to think about is your set of wings.
If you're buying a fairy costume, ALWAYS read the fine print when purchasing a sealed package or getting an online costume. MANY fairy costumes that are for-sale commercially do NOT include the wings, even though they may be shown on the package. Another item to watch for in the fine print is the fairy's wand, which is also not included, at times. And, if the costume you like shows a fairy's crown or headpiece in the package picture, make sure you find out if it's included or not, as well.
Many packaged costumes DON'T include any of the accessories shown in the picture. It doesn't mean that they're trying to be deceptive; it's simply a common practice done by all of the costume manufacturers. They want their costumes to look great in the photos...so they show a picture of the finished outfits (WITH accessories) on the cover. There will ALWAYS be a notice on the package of what's not included. It's considered your responsibility legally to read the package notes before buying the costume. (Nevertheless, almost any reputable store in the USA will accept a costume you return if you're disappointed with it for any reason.)
The reason you need to know what's included is to make accurate price comparisons. Sometimes a beautiful set of wings can cost just as much as the "dress" part of a fairy's costume! In order to compare prices fairly and accurately, you'll need to total up the sum of the dress AND the accessories you want to get before making your purchase. A cheap fairy costume may actually be more expensive in the long run than purchasing a more lavish costume if it doesn't come with wings and important accessories that you'll need to purchase later!
Even if you're sewing, you'll still have to think about the wings you want. Some fairy sewing patterns come with instructions included for wings, while others don't. If you plan to purchase the wings pre-made, this isn't a problem which affects you. But, if you're willing to try sewing wings...you'll certainly save money if you buy a package which includes wing patterns for the same price!
You'll find a selection of Fairy Wings for sale on Ebay. If you don't find a style you like for sale or to sew, there's a wider selection on Ebay. AT THE END OF THIS PAGE, you'll find a widget that shows the current selection of fairy wings up for bid on Ebay.
Fairy Costume Sewing Patterns
You're in luck--many good patterns are available commercially!
You'll find about a dozen different fairy costume patterns in your local stores. Considering the fact that each package can make several different styles of beautiful fairy dresses (or even pants suits!) that's quite a variety of options you'll have to think about!
Women's fairy patterns usually range from a Misses size 6 to a size 20. With some minor alterations, you'll be able to fit even if you're just a bit smaller...or more plus-size...than the costume's dimensions.
Girl's fairy patterns offer fewer sizes. There won't be any problem if you're trying to sew a fairy costume for your baby, toddler or preschool girl. Even up to size 8, you'll find a reasonable assortment. But there really aren't many options for girls in the tween and teen sizes.
Below is a review of different fairy costume patterns which you'll find for sale this year.
