Though this was the contest's first year, we received nearly 50 terrific entries. The contest's panel of judges had a really tough time reaching a decision...agonizing over each round of cuts. In the end, of course, not every good costume could get a prize. This year's winners are outstanding both for their craftsmanship, design, originality, and the quality of instructions provided so that our readers may enjoy trying to replicate these wonderful winning costumes for themselves next Halloween! A listing of the winner's names will soon be added to this page. What was the Halloween Creative Design Contest?A fun way for contestants to show off their original costume & decoration ideas...and maybe win a prize, too!Two Halloween contests were recently underway at Family-Vacation-Getaways.com!1.) The first one was our annual Halloween Costume Photo Contest, which was open to all men, women, boys, girls, dogs, cats, etc---whether or not these costumes were purchased, made from a pattern or kit...or created out of their own designs. (Note: US or Canadian residency is required; void where regulated or prohibited by local laws.) After all, everyone can look good in their costumes, even if they're simply been purchased. 2.) For 2009, a second type of Halloween contest was launched---a CREATIVE CONTEST! The rewards are a little higher--but are very much deserved by this special group of contestants who go to the trouble of designing, then creating, their costumes out of the ideas springing up in their own minds. This Halloween Creative Design Contest also accepted submissions for decorations and Halloween crafts projects in addition to costumes. Since not very many people design and put together their own costumes, then "decorations" and "crafts" categories were being added in order to make the contest large enough to stir up some good competition! Prizes for the Creative Design ContestThe Grand Prize winner will receive $150 for designing and creating the contest's best entry.The Halloween Creative Design Contest's 2nd place winner will receive $110. And the prize for 3rd place will be $80. In addition to the 3 major prize winners, there will be prizes for each of the contest's categories---costumes, decorations, and crafts/other. Each best-of-category winner receives a $50 prize. Runner-up prizes and "Best Beginner Project" prizes will be $20 each. Creative Design Contest RequirementsSubmissions must include 5 photos and clear instructionsContestants need to provide 5 pictures plus step-by-step project instructions in order to be eligible for winning. This is because the winning projects will be published...so that future readers will be able to re-create your project in their own homes and workshops. You need to provide them with adequate instructions and illustrations in order to do this. After all, you're not going to be there to help them along!Pictures will ideally include photos taken at various stages of the construction process. In other words, it will be easier for future readers to understand your instructions if you show photos of how your project should look at the various steps of completion. If you feel that sending MORE than 5 photos will be helpful, you may send extras. Five photos is simply the minimum requirement. If you are sending pictures of a previous year's project, then it may not be possible for you to include photos taken as you made your costume, decoration or craft. If this is the case, you may send 5 pictures of your finished project---preferably taken from different angles so that readers may get the best possible idea of how they can make your project in their own homes. If you only have one picture of your finished project, that's not enough for future readers to get a good idea about how to duplicate your work. HOWEVER, if you have made a costume, you may submit your picture to our 2009 Halloween Costume Contest...and it will be eligible to win a prize! Judging the Creative Design ContestWinners will be chosen by a panel of judges selected by this website. The last day of submissions to this contest will be November 3, 2009. All photos must be sent in by November 5th. Judging will begin on November 6th, and will take approximately 1 to 2 weeks for the winners to be decided and announced.Qualities the judges will be looking for in the winning projects will be the clarity of your instructions; the clarity of your photos; the ability of your photos to add depth and meaning to your instructions; the overall look of your finished project; and the ease with which someone can understand your project and make it themselves at home successfully without assistance. This contest is intended for amateur designers who can explain and illustrate their projects for other amateurs. Projects should not need skills which are above and beyond the abilities of the average hobbyist.
