IMAX Theaters in Southern California

2008 is the year you'll see an IMAX THEATER EXPLOSION!

Photo: Desert Imax Theater in Cathedral City, Ca...part of the greater Palm Springs area You've always known about IMAX theaters; you've grown up with them. They were always the theaters that made your jaw drop when you entered them---you couldn't help but utter the word "wow" the first few times you went into an IMAX. The screen was huge. The seats were cozy. You probably still remember nearly every IMAX movie you experienced as a child. Because getting to see one of the IMAX films was so rare, it was a memory you hung onto for a long time to come!

Fast forward to 2008: IMAX has long since learned that everyone loves their theaters...but that their traditional science movies made a whole lot of people yawn! (No...not YOU. You were one of the guests with a gifted mind who could appreciate such scholarly endeavors!) Over the past few years, IMAX has been experimenting with putting Hollywood blockbusters into their theaters. And you know what? The eyes of the IMAX folks began flashing green with dollar signs as their earnings piled up one bill on top of the next. People LOVE going to newly released films in an IMAX venue, they discovered. "Hey, if we make more theaters, more people can buy tickets!" they began to think. And, so a huge and sweeping plan was formed...and it may well revolutionize the way you watch your favorite new movies from now on!

The IMAX-AMC Revolution!

IMAX has an ambitious goal of making sure that nearly everyone living in a major US metropolitan city can visit an IMAX theater, if they wish. How will they accomplish this sweeping epic of a plan?

By teaming with the AMC theater system, which already has a web of new stadium-seat theaters built across the USA, and more still in the works! These new theaters have quickly become the "gold standard" for watching films...with their comfortable seating, digital sound---and, many times, digital projectors, as well. The AMC theaters picked out their best-performing new theaters (which will have the space for the IMAX project) and will plan to adapt them for IMAX use.

To make a long story short, in the next 3 years, 100 NEW IMAX LOCATIONS will open at AMC theaters across the United States. These will be DIGITAL IMAX theaters (both digital sound AND digital projection.)

50 new digital IMAX auditoriums will open up in 2008 alone! Soon, it will NOT be uncommon to see films in the IMAX format. Better hold tight to your early memories of those rare IMAX theater visits! From now on, IMAX movie-going will be a common experience---and the memories of each visit will all blur together!

SoCal AMC Theaters that will "go IMAX" in 2008!

Picture: Del Amo AMC Theater will get IMAX upgrade in 2008 While it hasn't been announced yet which Southern California AMC Theaters will get digital IMAX projectors & auditorium makeovers for 2009 and 2010, we DO know the list of IMAX theaters which will be coming our way in 2008.

Since the IMAX-AMC alliance wants to spread out theaters across the entire United States as quickly as possible, the 2008 makeovers will span the entire US thinly. Each metropolitan area won't get very many of the new IMAX theaters, in other words.

However, Southern California has a large population...and thus was lucky to get more of the new IMAX units coming to local AMC theaters than other parts of the country. Here's the list of Los Angeles and San Diego area AMC theaters getting IMAX makeovers in 2008---

1.) Arcadia: AMC Santa Anita 16 Theaters (at the Westfield Santa Anita Mall

2.) Burbank: AMC Burbank 16 Theaters (near the Burbank Town Center Mall) IMAX opening date set for November 2008 at the Burbank AMC 16 Theater!

3.) Los Angeles: AMC Century City 15 Theaters (in the Westfield Century City Mall) IMAX opening date set for November 2008 at Century City!

4.) Rowland Heights/City of Industry/La Puente area: AMC Puente Hills 20 Theaters (at the Puente Hills Mall)

5.) San Diego: AMC Palm Promenade 24 Theaters (at the Palm Promenade shopping center in the southern San Diego/Chula Vista area.

6.) Torrance: AMC Del Amo 18 Theaters (in the new open-air addition of the Del Amo Fashion Center Mall

7.) Woodland Hills: AMC Promenade 16 Theaters (at the Westfield Promenade Mall...just down the street from the newly-expanded Westfield Topanga Mall.)

We'll all be looking forward to the opening of these new Southern California IMAX theater locations. Meanwhile, we may already enjoy the IMAX locations listed in the section just below!

IMAX Theater Contact Information

Here are some useful links for finding out the IMAX Theater information you'd like to know.

IMAX Website: IMAX doesn't have its own theaters, but operates via partnerships with a variety of other companies. As you've noticed on this page, in just Southern California alone, IMAX partners with science museums, the AMC Theaters, the North American Cinemas and the Edwards Cinemas (now part of the Regal Entertainment group.) Nevertheless, Imax DOES maintain a central website on which you can find out about the different films they offer. You may use the following link to view the www.IMAX.com website.

EDWARDS IMAX SHOWTIMES: The most efficient way of finding out IMAX films being shown at a particular theater is to head to that theater's website for information. Links to the AMC, North American Cinemas and science museum IMAX theaters have already been included in the SoCal IMAX theater listings above. But, since several Edwards Theaters also have IMAX theaters, the link to the Edwards/Regal website was saved for the bottom of the page. Here's the link to the Edwards/Regal Theaters website where you can find out the IMAX shows & movie schedules for any of the Edwards IMAX theaters.
