A great place to take a rest break while traveling along Interstate 8 is at El Centro's Imperial Valley Mall, (AKA the "IV Mall" to local residents.)This attractive mall can offer you 4 department stores, a host of other good shopping, a variety of both fast-food and table service restaurants, and several entertainment options. During El Centro's long hot summers, travelers will be glad to enjoy a stretch break which provides not only pleasant surroundings, but also an air-conditioned shelter from the heat. Located just off I-8's Dogwood exit, the Imperial Valley Mall lies just a few blocks south of the freeway. In 2007, it's easy to spot the mall from the highway. This may not always be the case, though---Dogwood Ave is in the middle of a building boom! A shopping center is in the process of being built by the mall, and further development of the area is in the works. The Imperial Valley Mall has an attractive and air-conditioned food court. (The colorful children's carousel is in the food court, as well as the entrance to the mall's popular Ultra Star Cinemas.) Travelers in a hurry might not wish to take the time to stop & head into the mall. No problem! There's a nice choice of fast food and table-service restaurants located outside of the mall on their own little pads in the parking lot. These restaurants are easily visible from the street. The IV Mall's Ultra Star Cinema is now part of the Cinemark chain of theaters!In the past, residents and visitors to El Centro have enjoyed viewing newly-released movies at the IV Mall's Ultra Star Theaters. While the theater is still the same...and it still plays first-run films just like before, the cinema's ownership has changed. It's now a member of the Cinemark group (which also runs the popular Century & Tinseltown theaters, in case you're familiar with these brands.) Major things to know about the new ownership are as follows: Every Tuesday is discount day for all ages. All shows receive a special cheaper matinee price if they begin before 4 pm. A further discount is given on Mondays through Fridays if you attend the first showtime of the day. Other discounts given by the Cinemark chain include a child discount (ages 1 - 11); a senior discount (ages 62+); and military & student discounts, with appropriate official ID.
