Dolby Theater, Hollywood, CA
The famous Kodak Theater has a new name!
In the slide show above, you're viewing pictures of the famous Dolby Theater (formerly called the Kodak Theater) in Hollywood, California...plus photos of the golden Oscar statuettes given to all winners of the annual Academy Awards ceremony, which is held here. On this page, you'll learn more about how your may take a theater tour (or attend a performance) here.
Dolby Theater, home of the Academy AwardsThe annual Academy Awards Ceremony is held in Hollywood, California every February!
And just WHERE does the Academy Awards Ceremony take place? Inside the beautiful Dolby Theater (formerly called the Kodak Theater,) a place where YOU may take a tour during your vacation to Los Angeles!
For most of its history, the Academy Awards didn't have a home of its own. The very first Academy Awards ceremony---way back in 1929!---took place at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. As the years passed, the Academy Awards Ceremony took place in various places throughout Hollywood and greater Los Angeles---the Ambassador and Biltmore Hotels, Grauman's Chinese Theater, the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium, the Pantages Theater, the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. These are all nice venues, to be sure...but the world-famed Academy Awards Ceremony needed a HOME...a permanent place for "Oscar" to call his own. And so, a home was built!
"Oscar's" new home is the sparkling Dolby Theater in the Hollywood and Highland Center on Hollywood Boulevard. With the theater's opening in 2001, not only did the Academy Awards Ceremony gain a permanent home, but Hollywood Boulevard itself became transformed and revitalized.
YOU can get in on some Oscar fun when you visit Hollywood, California---by taking a tour of the lovely Dolby Theater! A guide will take you inside the famous auditorium and explain all the little known details about the facilities that you may never hear about otherwise. Or, you may decide to view a Cirque du Soleil performance at the Dolby Theater, instead. (Yes, the theater is also a fully-functioning artistic venue, in addition to being the Academy Awards ceremony's home.) A visit to the Dolby Theater will enhance your California visit, and you'll discover how to tour it (or take in a performance) in the paragraphs below.
Dolby Theater, Home of the Academy Awards CeremonyIn the picture of the Dolby Theater to your left, you see its sweeping red tiled staircase leading up to the theater's entry doors. In effect, this colorful and majestic staircase looks like it's covered by a permanent "red carpet!"
The Dolby Theater's auditorium (not pictured) was designed to be elegant, and to resemble the grand opera houses of Europe. Yet at the same time, the theater's auditorium is the utmost example of state-of-the-art features for broadcasting. (Not only are the Academy Awards Ceremonies televised from this famous Hollywood landmark, but ALSO many other widely diverse events, from the American Idol finals...to the Latin Grammy Awards...to the American Film Institute lifetime achievement awards...to the BET Entertainment Awards...and more!)
And yet, the general public gets to use the Dolby Theater, as well---both on guided public "behind-the-scenes" tours AND as a venue for terrific live performances! In the past, the public enjoyed a rotating schedule of singers, orchestras, bands, ballets...or even touring Broadway productions. And, since Summer, 2011, the public has been invited to view the Cirque du Soleil's production of "Iris," which will make its home in the Dolby Theater through 2021. So, except for about one month of the year when the Academy is preparing for the actual awards ceremony itself, the doors of the Dolby (Kodak) Theater are thrown open for all to enjoy!
