Young people like the MV Mall because of its mix of stores that feature a number of shops with reasonable prices. Yet, "old timers" also enjoy the Mission Valley Mall. Indeed, for many middle-aged San Diegans, this mall is "woven into the heart." Many of today's business and community leaders were "mall rats" at Mission Valley Mall in decades past. Expansion plans at Mission Valley Mall
as middle-class shoppers are snubbed at Fashion Valley
Fashion Valley is bringing Rodeo Drive and South Coast Plaza to San Diego, all rolled up into one nice, neat package named, of course, the Fashion Valley Mall. Fashion Valley has always striven to be the more upscale of the 2 shopping centers, but never in the way it has in recent months. Mid-priced stores are being sent packing, so that more upscale stores can move in. A true Beverly Hills-style roster of boutiques is shaping up at the Fashion Valley Mall, leaving middle-class shoppers fewer choices by far.
This turn of events is leaving the Mission Valley Mall free to become a mall leader for consumers seeking mid-priced merchandise. Especially since gas prices have soared and a recession in the retail sector has set in, the Mission Valley Mall now becomes the logical place for consumers to take shelter after they've felt driven-away from the nearby competitor's door.
In addition to the main mall, the Mission Valley West shopping center (located to the mall's west side) is attractive and busy. Restaurants on both sides of Mission Center Rd are bustling.
Interesting times are ahead as the Mission Valley mall works on plans to expand! The additions to the mall area would not only bring more retail shops and restaurants, but would also include the addition of office space and/or a hotel...and even residential units.
