Rancho Mirage Monterey MarketplaceDiscover ultra-convenient shopping/dining along I-10 in greater Palm Springs!
There are two reasons why travelers should know about the Monterey Marketplace shopping center in Rancho Mirage, California.
First, if you've been traveling towards the Palm Springs/greater Los Angeles area along Interstate 10 from Arizona, it's been a long, long time since you've been in "civilization." Except for a small shopping selection in Blythe, California (at the AZ/CA border,) you've basically been viewing nothing but sand and desert plants for HOURS...without much selection in restaurants and stores since you left Phoenix. You've undoubtably arrived in the Indio/greater Palm Springs area tired from sitting cooped up in your vehicle, and hungry. Plus, who knows what supplies you've depleted. Your camera's batteries could be dead. You could have spilled grape juice on your outfit. You could have sipped away all the soft drinks and eaten all the crackers that you had on board. Hey...it's time to stretch, eat, and restock the camera & snack bags! The Rancho Mirage Monterey Marketplace is the first shopping center you'll reach once you're "back in the city" which has BOTH a good selection of restaurants and stores, PLUS has easy-off/easy on-again access (so you CAN'T get lost!) And, anyone in your group who's ready for some entertainment will be pleased to find a Regal stadium theater at this convenient Rancho Mirage shopping center, as well! (See photo to your left.) The second reason travelers should know about Rancho Mirage's Monterey Marketplace is that it's at the Monterey Avenue exit of I-10...which is a major gateway for the desert area's tourist attractions. The Living Desert Zoo (AKA Palm Springs Zoo) is reached by taking the Monterey Ave exit (directions: head south for 6 miles; turn left/east on Hwy 111; then right/south on Portola, following the signs. The Palm Springs Zoo address is 47900 Portola Ave Palm Desert, CA 92260.) The Children's Discovery Museum of the Desert (AKA Palm Springs Children's Museum) is also reached by taking the Monterey Avenue exit. (Directions: take Monterey south to Gerald Ford; turn right/west and keep going to the museum. The Palm Springs Children's Museum's address is 71-701 Gerald Ford Drive, Rancho Mirage, CA 92270.) The Bob Hope Cultural Center & McCallum Theatre for live musical performances is located down Monterey Avenue (at Fred Waring Drive.) So is The College of the Desert, part of the California Community College system. There's still MORE fun located off the I-10 Monterey Avenue exit! Palm Desert's tony shopping district, El Paseo, including the ultra-lovely Gardens on El Paseo open-air mall is located off of Monterey Avenue about 6 miles south of the freeway. So is the area's regional shopping mall, the store-filled, climate-controlled Westfield Palm Desert, located at the intersection of Monterey Ave and Highway 111. So, whether you intend to fully explore the tourist attractions of Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert & Palm Springs...or simply want to take a quick rest break and head on your way...Rancho Mirage's Monterey Marketplace shopping center will make a convenient stop along your way. List of stores at Rancho Mirage's Monterey Marketplace
The Monterey Marketplace shopping center's listing of stores may not be very long...but that's a bit deceptive. The size of most stores on the list is LARGE, and therefore, when they're all put together in one place, the shopping district becomes simply HUGE. You WILL need your car to get around the Rancho Mirage Monterey Marketplace!
Second of all, though the Monterey Marketplace began in the city of Rancho Mirage, it has gone through several phases of expansion within its short lifetime. Since Monterey Avenue is the dividing line between Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert, the shopping district around the original Monterey Marketplace stores now straddles this line into both cities. Therefore, on the list of shops below, you'll find BOTH Rancho Mirage and Palm Desert addresses. Tourists should also note that gasoline IS available at this exit, though not specifically mentioned on this list.
