Do you love outlet shopping? Would poking through stores and scoring a bargain feel like the perfect addition to your California vacation? If so, you'll find several interesting factory outlet malls in the greater San Francisco area that will be worth your while to check out. On this page, we'll talk about 4 outstanding outlet malls. They are---1.) The Great Mall of the Bay Area, at Milpitas (between Oakland and San Jose.) The Great Mall is huge; it's the largest factory outlet mall in the entire Bay Area. It's a great place to visit, because there's all sorts of food 'n' fun going on at the Great Mall in addition to the shopping opportunities that you'll find there. No matter what ages the children in your group might be, they'll find something to amuse themselves at the Great Mall, making it the ideal factory outlet center for families to visit. In addition, this part of the metro San Francisco gets really, really HOT during the summertime. The Great Mall (like many of the Mills malls, of which it is affilitated) is huge...a cavernous place that's delightfully air conditioned. Like many Mills Malls, it acts like a "town center" for locals, drawing people into its large air-conditioned space where they can get out and stretch...without having to swelter in the heat.
2.) The Napa Prime Outlets, on the other hand, are out of the way (north of the San Francisco metro area) and don't have much going on for kids. BUT...the Napa Prime Outlet Mall is THE place in the greater San Francisco region for high-end shopping. As you'll see in the details of this page below, you'll find upscale brands at the Napa Outlets that you just CAN'T find anywhere else. Though out of the way for locals, taking a trip to the Napa Outlet Mall is a "natural" for tourists, because it's right on the way to the attractions of the Napa Valley wine country.

3.) The Petaluma Village Premium Outlets are in a great location for tourists visiting the San Francisco area. For those of you who are taking the Coastal route, the Petaluma Outlets will either be right along your path, or not far out of the way (depending on which exact road you happen to be traveling.) At the Petaluma Outlets, you'll find an uncrowded, mid-sized outdoor mall featuring both some upscale brands mixed in with stores aimed at the mid-range shopper. And, if you have kids in tow, they'll love the playground here! (See photo below on this page.)
4.) The St. Helena Marketplace, formerly called the St. Helena Premium Outlets. This small outlet center features several important outlet stores...including the only Escada and Tumi outlets in the region.
OTHER OUTLET MALLS: Several other good outlet malls are fairly convenient to the Bay Area, if you don't mind a bit of driving. The large Vacaville Premium Outlets and the small, independent Tracy Outlets are reviewed on the Sacramento Area Outlets page of this website. Directions to the Petaluma Premium Outlets: You'll need to arrive at the Petaluma Outlets by taking US Highway 101....which, coming from downtown San Francisco, is a freeway all the way from the Golden Gate Bridge to Petaluma. You'll want to take the Old Redwood Highway/Petaluma Blvd North exit. (Petaluma Blvd changes names when it crosses the freeway; it becomes Old Redwood Highway to the east of the freeway.) Head south on Petaluma Blvd for just over 1 mile until you reach the entrance to the Petaluma Outlets.

As you look at the map, you'll note that the exit you need to take is NOT directly to the side of the mall. Since many malls these days are built exactly at a freeway interchange, you'll be less confused if you know ahead of time that you'll have to travel more than a mile down Petaluma Blvd after you exit. Yes, the mall is visible from the freeway...and if you're coming from San Francisco, you'll see it before you have to exit. (On the other hand, if you're heading southward from Napa Valley towards the mall, you'll have to exit before you actually spot the mall from Highway 101.)

Unlike "outlet-only" factory centers, the Great Mall of the Bay is a "hybrid" mall. It DOES mix in non-outlet stores among its offerings, and it has a larger selection of restaurants & snack shops than other outlet malls. In addition, the mall offers entertainment...including the large Century Theaters 20-plex...and stores in too many categories to list in this traveler's review. Hours of operation: Business hours at the Great Mall of the Bay are as follows: Mondays through Saturdays, shops open at 10 am and close at 9 pm. On Sundays, the outlet mall opens at 11 am and closes at 8 pm. Certain establishments may choose to set their own, individual hours.
Directions to the Great Mall of the Bay: You'll need to approach the Great Mall from either I-680 or I-880. From either of these Interstate Freeways, you should take the Montague Parkway exit. The Great Mall of the Bay Area lies just off of Montague Parkway between these two freeways. The distance between Interstate 680 and Interstate 880 is not far at this point...so approaching from either one of these 2 interstates is convenient. The way into the mall is adequately marked by signs; just follow 'em in!
