The new Shamu Show, "Believe" has begun!

The new Shamu Show relies heavily on a giant LCD screen for showing closeups to the audience All 3 SeaWorld parks---San Antonio, San Diego and Orlando---opened a brand new Shamu Show in 2006. The name of this killer whale spectacular is "Believe!"

For the new "Believe!" Shamu show, all 3 parks have received makeovers to their Shamu Stadiums...new decor, new sound systems, new cameras and screen systems. A brand-new "Believe" musical score was written just for the show at these 3 parks. The killer whales and their trainers perfecter new routines. The trainers got new wetsuite...in black and white, to match Shamu!

So, what are the results of all this work? Well, the crowd has gone wild about the new "Believe" Shamu show at SeaWorld San Antonio...so I'll tell you about it!

The new Shamu Show -- The Show Begins

SeaWorld San Antonio's Shamu stadium is enclosed, while Sea World San Diego's Shamu Stadium has no roof The first thing I should mention is that the brand-new killer whale show, "Believe!" gets very crowded! Come early...or you'll either have to sit in the "soak section"...or, maybe miss out on a seat altogether!

Another thing to remember about Shamu Stadium in San Antonio is that there's only one giant screen at this stadium. Since so much of the show's action can be seen better on the screen than by looking directly at the Shamu Pool itself, it's also a good idea to choose your seat where you can get a good view of that screen! If you get too close, then the screen will be at a hard-to-view angle; but if you're too far away, then images on the screen will seem too small.

Shamu's moves and the trainer's moves appear enlarged on a TV screen for the whole audience to see during the new Shamu Show, Believe First, you'll start to hear the new "Believe!" musical score...which can also be heard via loudspeakers outside of Shamu Stadium. That's your call to hurry on into the stadium, if you're not already there. The new score is upbeat, and meant to appeal to a wide variety of people.

When the show itself begins, you'll see a SeaWorld employee swing on a high-flying trapeze which is suspended from the roof of Shamu Stadium. This was the one-and-only time the flying trapeze was used in the performance that I attended.

Next, the audience heard the story of a female Shamu trainer who had longed to work with killer whales since she was a girl of nine years old. Her story was tied to the "Believe" theme because throughout all these years, she believed that she could reach her goal...and, of course, finally she achieved her dream.

A boy from the audience meets Shamu the killer whale during the new Shamu Show, Believe Towards the beginning of the show, the crowd also got to watch as a pre-selected little boy from the audience got to meet Shamu "in person." (If I get the things that happened in the show out of order...well, I wasn't sitting there with a notepad jotting everything down!) It was great that this little fellow got to meet Shamu...but I'll bet each of the hundreds of kids in the audience will go away believing that they can really meet Shamu now. Only, they'll find that this is not so easy to accomplish, unless they visit dozens of shows!

Another "crowd favorite" in the opening segments of the show is when Shamu and his friends team up to splash members of the audience who have chosen to sit in the splash zone. The more spray the killer whales sent into the crowd, the louder the audience roared!

New Shamu Show, "Believe!" -- Shamu the Killer Whale's Tricks

Shamu the Killer Whale's trainer rides atop his back...just like he's a surfboard! I would have thought that the opening acts were leading up to a large section of the show in which Shamu and his killer whale friends performed some tricks. Well, yes; Shamu and the other whales did some performing. However, as it turned out, what I thought were the "pre-acts" were really the bulk of the show. Shamu's actual performance time was not nearly as long as I'd hoped it would be.

By the way, SeaWorld no longer calls Shamu's antics "whale tricks," Now, they say that Shamu "exhibits whale BEHAVIORS."

By whatever name Shamu's stunts are called, I wish he would have done more of them!

Shamu the Killer Whale performs a leap during the new Shamu Show, Believe In the picture above, you can see a trainer riding on Shamu's nose...like she's doing a "hang ten" on a surf board! And, in the photo to your right, you see Shamu making one of the several leaps that he performs during the "Believe" show. Below, you'll see Shamu posing on a shelf during the show. (Believe it or not, this move has become so popular that it's even added a new term to the swimming pool industry! If your swimming pool sports a shallow layer in which babies and toddlers can wade and splash, that area is called the pool's "Shamu shelf!" And, Shamu shelves are becoming hot features to add when people build swimming pools these days!)

Alas, as Shamu performs, the time flies by so quickly that the rest of the "Believe!" show is over in a blink. Unlike past Shamu shows, however, there is still more that SOME people get to do at Shamu stadium after the bulk of the guests have departed!

The new Shamu Show, "Believe" -- After the Show

SeaWorld trainers feed the killer whales buckets of fish immediately after the new Shamu Show, Believe For an extra fee, of course, a number of guests get to participate in an after-the-show photo session with Shamu!

First, the hundreds of spectators in Shamu Stadium must depart. During this time, Shamu and the other whales get to swim around their own private pool in back of the stadium and "take a break." Also, their trainers come to feed them a snack---buckets of fish, their favorite!

When the crowd has left the stadium, those guests who will be attending the photo session gather into a small area and hear a lecture about "how to behave" during their photo shoot with Shamu. One of the most important rules? "Don't take any photos of your own!"

So, how do guests pose with Shamu? No, they don't actually go into the water with him. Guests stand by the edge of the pool, and Shamu swims up closely enough behind them to be seen in the photo with them!
