If you're looking for some shopping fun in the La Jolla neighborhood of greater San Diego, the Westfield University Town Center Mall will fit the bill!This interesting shopping mall opened back in 1974. The University Town Center has kept up with its appearances, and under the current ownership of the Westfield group, has retained a very nice mix of stores to offer its customers.
This La Jolla-area mall has gone by several names. The mall was originally spelled "University Towne Center" (with the word "towne" spelled with an "e" to make it sound fancy). Google searchers, on the other hand, usually use the no-nonsense spelling of "University Town Center." Later, the Westfield group bought the mall and, like alot of other Westfield malls, it got stuck with Westfield's pet word "Shoppingtown" attatched to it. Now, Westfield has changed the name of the mall still another time. At least for this year, the name in favor is "Westfield UTC," a name which goes virtually unused by most locals and Google searchers. Who can keep it all straight? (Meanwhile, the name "Westfield Shoppingtown" is still emblazoned on signs that seem to be "everywhere" at the mall...even though that's not the mall's official name any more!)
One of the mall's biggest delights are its many varieties of trees, and its beautiful landscaping. The parking lot itself is nearly an arboretum! (Easterners longing for fall color in palm-tree laden Southern California should head to the University Town Center mall to view the beautiful reds and golds of the leaves here...a very good place to see stunning, mature deciduous trees.)

Westfield UTC Mall has an Ice Skating Rink!
Wow---it's not every day that you can go ice skating while you're shopping at a mall! But, the University Towne Center is indeed one of those few malls which can offer you such a delightful choice!The name of the mall's ice skating rink is Ice Town; phone number is 858-452-9110. You'll find Ice Town in its own separate building at the mall complex.
Not only can you go skating, but you can try it for free! Of course, there's a "catch!" You'll only get one free trial per person...but at least that one free trial will let you know if learning how to skate is a hobby you (or your children) wish to persue. To get your free skating lesson and session, show up at the University Town Center Mall on any Saturday morning and head to Ice Town by 10:30 am. The skating session begins at 11:15 am; the reason you'll need to be there early is to make sure you get a spot in the class!

The proposed revamping of the Westfield UTC Mall will bring a modern new stadium theater to the shopping center. However, if the mall is refurbished, it will take many months to finish the project.Meanwhile, what about seeing movies near the University Town Center mall? Unfortunately, the Mann Theater which was once at the mall is gone...leaving the mall in its current, movie-less condition.
