Wild Rivers Water Park
When will this well-loved Orange County, California water park open again?
In the slide show above, you're viewing pictures of the Wild Rivers water park in Irvine, California. This popular family attraction was a big hit with both Orange County residents and tourists alike. Unfortunately, Wild Rivers has lost its lease, and is currently looking for a new location. Wild Rivers will NOT open in 2014, but there are definitely possiblities being discussed for 2015.
Wild Rivers--lease not extended through 2012 season!Wild Rivers water park was a popular summertime attraction in Orange County, California which recently closed for its 2011 season. However, the Irvine Company (the park's landlord) has failed to renew its lease for 2012.
Yet, Wild Rivers still has hundreds of ardent fans...and they have been very active in keeping the park open for as long as it has! Every year since 2007 might have been the last season for Wild Rivers if it weren't for the water park's outspoken fans. Why has Wild Rivers had so much trouble?
Well, Wild Rivers does not own the land on which it has been sitting. The Irvine Company does...and Wild Rivers leases its spot of real estate from them. In 2007, The Irvine Company informed Wild Rivers that its lease would not be renewed for 2008. (The Irvine Co. wants to build homes or apartments on the land, instead.)
Wild River fans flew into action at the first sign of trouble...and protested loud & clear against this action that would rob hundreds of families of a major summertime recreational outlet. Through the effort of these park die-hards, even the local government got active with their concerns. And the result? The water park was allowed a year's time for Wild Rivers to try to find a place to relocate and rebuild. So then, Wild Rivers was able to operate for its 2008 season.
But what about the 2009, 2010 and 2011 summer seasons at Wild Rivers? The good news for water park lovers came, strangely enough, because of the recession. Due to the economy's downturn, the housing development scheduled to be built on the land where Wild Rivers sits was delayed. Phew! Wild River's lease was then secure through the end of the 2011 season!
Unfortunately, the recession has created new opportunities for building. There are hundreds of families who have been displaced by foreclosures on their own homes...and need a place to live. It looks like an attractive time to build apartments has arrived. (Other builders in the city of Irvine have even been selling single-family homes like hotcakes. When one recent subdivision opened in mid-2011, the homes were nearly sold on the very first day!)
Will Wild Rivers give up? Of course not! Talks are in the works for getting a location and financing. Wild Rivers still hopes to build a park in Orange County, and would like to be ready to open by May, 2015. Nothing is certain at this time.
If the park does finally open, they'll post it on the Wild Rivers Facebook page.
